It depends on the severity of the disease. In most cases, anywhere between 3 to 6 months. In chronic cases, the herbs are given for 6 months to 1 year and then maiantaince and rejuvenating herbs are given lifelong.

Few Ayurvedic herbs like triphala, ashwagandha and kitchen spices like cumin, turmeric can be used without a gusidance from Ayurevdic practioner if one has knowledge of doshas and their body type. But in most cases, the herbs have to be taken under the guidance of an Ayurvedic practioner.

Besides managing diet and lifestyle to fix or prevent a problem, Ayurveda offers herbs which are beneficial in chronic diseases which have mainly symptomatic relief  in mainstream medicine.
